Copyright is a legal concept followed by most companies which provides the legal ownership and control of intellectual property in many forms for a finite amount of time.
Copyright's main use is to stop people from stealing other peoples intellectual property and using it for there own profit which is rightfully the creators. The act of stealing intellectual property can come in many forms such as sharing music or music videos on the internet on sites such as youtube and vimeo without the owners permission allowing the poster to gain ad revenue and revenue from views provided by the video sharing sights and creating videos or content witch implements copyrighted material without the owners permission.
However in most countries implement fair use which allows the use of copyrighted material without the correspondence of the copyright holder for certain uses such as parody,criticism and research. Fair use is a hotly discussed topic due to its ability to allow non copyright holders to essentially make money out of content they do not possess the rights to.
The severity of breaching copyright varies in different countries ranging from imprisonment and large fines fines down to small fines.
A famous example of copyright claim is Vanilla Ice vs Queen and David Bowie.
When Vanilla Ice had his hit song "Ice Ice Baby" he neglected to credit Queen and David Bowie for the obvious rip of the baseline from there song "Under Pressure" however shortly after being interviewed about weather the song was using parts of "Under Pressure" ,and refusing this was the case, the song was quickly re-credited to add Queen and Bowie's names and proclaiming the previous statement was a "joke". This claim was resolved quickly with a out of court settlement with a undisclosed amount.
Copyright is a problem for students and other small parties due to asking for permission can lead to not getting a response and if the party follows though with using the copyright material they are susceptible prosecution and a order to delete all copies of the material using the copyrighted material.
